            _
            Colleagues and Friends,

The University of Washington has been funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH) to develop a new measure of mobility for persons who use lower limb prostheses to be called the Prosthetic Limb Users Survey (PLUS).  Existing measures of prosthetic outcomes have serious shortcomings including considerable floor and/or ceiling effects and no solid evidence that the scores are responsive to clinically meaningful changes.  As you can imagine, it takes a considerable amount of work to develop a new outcome measure that will provide valid, clinically-meaningful scores that are sensitive to change, yet are brief and easy to administer.  Most importantly it cannot be accomplished without the assistance of prosthetists, physicians, and persons who use lower limb prostheses!

As one step in the development process, UW researchers need volunteers who use lower limb prostheses to fill out an online survey about themselves, their health, and things that they can do with their prosthesis. However, more importantly, we need your help to let persons with lower limb amputation know about this survey (www.mobilitysurvey.org ).  To let persons with lower limb amputation know about the survey, we have developed informational posters, flyers, and business cards that we can send you free of charge.  Simply fill out the PDF order form (http://uwcorr.washington.edu/mobilitysurvey/files/PLUS_order_form.pdf ) and email it to andre@mobilitysurvey.org .  The materials you order will be mailed to you so that you can display, post, or provide them as you wish.

You can find out more about this ambitious project in the following articles:
            http://www.oandpbusinessnews.com/view.aspx?rid=83673
            http://www.oandp.com/articles/2011-03_02.asp

Please consider promoting this project to people with lower limb amputations and sharing this information with your colleagues who treat persons with lower limb amputations.  The more people who participate in this survey, the better the outcome measure will be.  The measure that we are developing will be made available at no cost to users, so you can look forward to using it in the future to track mobility outcomes in your patients and subjects who use lower limb prostheses!

            Thank you,

            Brian J. Hafner, PhD

            Dear Colleagues,

The Northwestern University Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center for Prosthetics and Orthotics, funded by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR), is conducting a survey in preparation for a State of the Science Meeting to be held in 2012 at the Northwestern University Prosthetics-Orthotics Center (NUPOC).

The purpose of this survey is to investigate the opinions of the Orthotics and Prosthetics community (including consumers, educators, engineers, family members or personal companions of consumers, orthotists, pedorthotists, physicians, prosthetic/orthotic residents, prosthetic/orthotic students, prosthetists, researchers, therapists, etc.) regarding the direction that research in the field of Orthotics and Prosthetics should take over the next 5-10 years.

If you choose to participate in this survey, we will not collect any identifiable information about you. Your responses to this survey are totally anonymous.

The results of this survey will be compiled for discussion at the Northwestern University Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center for Prosthetics and Orthotics State of the Science Meeting to be held in 2012, and will be presented in a report as required by NIDRR as well as at professional meetings and in publications.

It is hoped that the information gathered here will help guide future clinically relevant research in the field of Orthotics and Prosthetics.

The survey is brief and will only take a short amount of time to complete. It can be found at:
            https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/NUPOC_Research_Survey

The survey will be open for input until March 11, 2012.

We appreciate your time and effort in assisting us with this endeavor.

            Sincerely,
            Stefania Fatone, PhD

            Steven Gard, PhD

P.S. Please feel free to forward this email message to anyone in the Orthotics and Prosthetics community who you think would be interested in contributing.

The Rehabilitation and Technologies and Outcomes Lab at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago is conducting a research study to compare the impact on functional outcomes in dysvascular transfemoral amputees with a microprocessor knee vs a mechanical knee. Subjects with above knee amputations must have had the amputation due to circulation problems, must have had their current prosthesis for at least 6 months and must be able to travel to the Rehab Institute of Chicago. The protocol will last for a year and subjects will be studied for 6 months each with their mechanical knee or the C leg.  A variety of outcome measures will be assessed at different points in the year. For further information or to refer potential subjects, please contact Robert Lipschutz, CP (rlipschutz@ric.org, 312.238.4137) or Gayatri Mathur, PT (gmathur@ric.org, 312.238.3840).
